Traveler Background

The Traveler program provides free remote access for all Arkansas citizens to high-quality subscription databases from reputable publishers. The databases contain a variety of information sources: popular magazines, newspapers and periodicals; academic and professional journals, eBook collections, and general reference and discovery sources that are suitable for online and scholarly research. The resources selected support a variety of education and reading levels.

The Traveler project began in 1997 after the IMLS was formed and LSTA was transferred to it from federal Department of Education. LSTA funds have been used to provide Arkansas libraries with online resources that only a fraction of the libraries could afford otherwise. The program presents a significant costs savings across the state. Traveler spends approximately $750.00 per library, but each library would pay over $100,000 to duplicate the same resources and access.

Length of Database Subscriptions

The database subscriptions are active from August 1 through July 31 of each year. Resources are selected by the Network Advisory Committee. Its recommendations are submitted to The Arkansas State Library Board for approval in the February ASL Board meeting each year.

This schedule provides Arkansas libraries an opportunity to review their own resources subscriptions and use their budget to purchase complementary resources to the annual Traveler package. The subscriptions are paid with funds from Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
