Public Library Directors Summit: E + R = O

Events happen. We respond. We get outcomes.

But what if we don’t wait for events, but anticipate them and work backward from the outcomes we need? What if we applied innovation and intention to our responses to get better outcomes?

Public library staff have served in significantly challenging conditions, against the backdrop of advancing technologies, and through diverse and changing community needs for over a century. Yet, we often respond to very difficult political challenges today in the same way we would have done decades ago.

There’s no silver bullet or single response that will give us the outcomes we need. But we can gain skills that will enable us to craft better, more intentional responses. At the very least, we can gain better mastery of ourselves in difficult situations.
